i used to rule the world seas would rise when i gave the word now in the morning i sleep alone sweep the streets i used to own
winter in tuscany was always beautiful. on that particular day, the weather had taken a warmer turn, which surprised everyone but the weather reporters who, for once, had been correct - the day was shaping up to be a blissful, summer reminiscent twenty eight degrees celsius. to match the weather, the sun shone in greeting after weeks of rain and bitter chills. everywhere, people could be seen stepping out onto the streets in short sleeved shirts and sunglasses - some even tempted mother nature by daring to wear shorts and thongs.
one of these people was a miss odette shaabrak. she wore white shorts and donned her favourite black prada bag, but was not too daring and decided to wear a gray scalf just in case. odette was like that - logical and safe. it was this logicalness and safety that, she presumed, were the main reasons the man she was in love with didn't return her feelings; she was, in essence, a total bore.
it was he with whom she was meeting. it was a thursday, and she and said person never had classes at copabella, the art school they attended, on thursdays. it was just luck of the timetable regime - third year music students got three days off a week and four days on. one of the best parts of university was that it wasn't at all like high school. the people were more mature, the teachers could be considered actual human beings, and it wasn't the monotonous six hours, five days a week drill that had been bored into them previously. odette had loved school tremendously, and had excelled in everything she did because she enjoyed it so much. reflecting back, she realised that school had actually been quite boring and uneventful ( not unlike herself, she noted ) and felt shamed at having actually had fun.
fun and odette were not two words she would've ever considered using in the same sentence, let alone context.
odette sighed glumly as she leaned back into the comfortable wooden chair she now sat in. her blonde hair was hanging loose over her shoulders and behind her back, wavy, luscious and boring. she really had no self confidence, but that might have been concentrated due to the fact she had a lunch date with rhys thorpe in precisely six minutes and thirty seven seconds.
her hazel eyes looked carefully, trying to spot his face in the crowd as he walked up to their table. their table - at their cafe that they had lunch at every thursday on their day off. though only in her mind, anything that associated herself and rhys belonging together made her heart leap exuberantly. it was so much easier to allow herself, for just a second, to think that she and he were not worlds apart, as they actually were. and when she got home later, as she always did, she would cry herself to sleep thinking of how awfully wretched it was to be in love with someone who could never possibly love her back.

because whoever came up with "i love you" never really meant it like i do
the weather, for a tuscan winter was fairly warm. which had shocked just about everyone. however, those shocked did not include the weather reporters, who were always wrong, but had somehow been right. no one could have guessed that. even rhys was out in the weather amongst everyone else. the streets were busy, except for those that were in school. even some people had decided to skip school for the day to enjoy the weather, even though it would last until everyone got out. however, that was none of rhys's concern. the only concern, or thing that mattered to him, was where he was headed.
he was on his way out to lunch to join odette. the two had been friends since first year, and he was already head ofver heels for her. well, being in love with someone just a few months after meeting them and now being three years into the friendship could truly through a guy over his heels. the two were best friends, but rhys wanted a lot more, well, not really. he just wanted to be with her. to call her his, to express how he truly felt about her. to hold her in his arms, and keep her there forever, regardless of the fact that he could already wrap his arms around her. but, he never wanted to let go.
the two had been joining each other for lunch on thursdays now that they were both in their third year. all third years had three days off of school, and four days in. he couldn't complain, but it also meant that he needed to find something to do with that extra day. and, without odette, it would've been a challenge. well, possibly. he could just as easily curl up with a book, or go for a long walk. but, with company he was used to, he enjoyed it. he enjoyed it a lot more than any other way, anyway. the way he saw it, any time spent with odette was time well worth spending.
he was wakling up to the table now, a little earlier than usual. well, about five minutes earlier than usual anyway. he spotted the perfect little blonde sitting at the table as soon as he neared it through the crowd. she looked stunning, the white shorts and tank top. the gray scarf wrapped around her neck. and the pendant he had bought her, which she never removed from the spot around her neck. he knew it was there, even if the scarf covered most of it, or all of it, really at this point. she was like an angel fallen from the heavens, and that wasn't just some line. it was truly how he saw her.
hey you, rhys said, smiling as he came up to the table now, and smiled down at her. it was something else that they did, hugged each other every time they saw each other, like best friends did. and if he couldn't be her boyfriend, her best friend was fine with him.

seeing rhys made her heart flutter and shatter at the same time. even from a hundred metres away, he stood out from the crowd and took her breath away. odette could have sat and watched him all day long. he was her knight in shining armour, her tall, dark and handsome soulmate that no other man could ever compare to. odette's face lit up as she watched him and she wore that bright smile she reserved only for him; for only rhys could make her as happy as she was at that moment. everything else seemed to pale in comparison; it wasn't that anything or anyone she loved meant any less to her, it was just that rhys meant so much more, and then some.
he towered over her small frame, a feature that she adored about him. it made her feel safe and secure. odette stood up from her sitting position and wrapped her arms around his upper body, squeezing tight. she closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, loving the way he smelt, the way he felt so strong and so cuddly at the same time. she lingered in his arms for just a second too long; best friends never hugged the way she did, but it was her guilty pleasure and she could get away with it. reluctantly, she loosened her grasp and took a small step back. wiping the disappointment off her facial expression, odette beamed once more up at him, delighted at his presence.
'hey to you, too,' said odette, grinning foolishly. it took all her willpower to step back and sit back down, but she had a lot of practise of restraining herself around him and managed it without much of a struggle. three years was a long time to be in love with someone without their knowledge, and an even longer time to be able to gain enough self control to keep from jumping on said person each time they met up. 'how are you, rhys ? i didn't even get a chance to see you yesterday, and you know me ... i don't trust it when you say 'fine' over the phone.'
odette tried to relax back into her seat, but it was difficult. normally, she could control her emotions easily around him - she could disguise just how much he affected her without too much strain. but today was different for some reason, and she couldn't figure out why. perhaps it was the additional heat wave of that thursday in winter; perhaps it was because she hadn't slept well the night previous. as she watched him from across the relatively small wooden table, she removed her gray scarf as the heat soared and ran a forefinger over her necklace. it was a beautiful silver one, with an intricate design on the centrepeice. it had been a gift from the man who sat opposite her now; she smiled at the memory of that birthday when she had recieved it. since that day, she'd not been further than a foot from it, and never went more than the time it took her to shower each day without it on.
'how about this weather ?' quiered odette, gesturing out to the passers by on the street. from under the shaded aclove where they sat, locals could be seen wandering the streets, suffering under the unusually warm weather. odette was grateful for a change from the usual blistering cold winds and spiteful rain. 'it's strange; i had to dig around my house for some shorts to wear ! the weather channel was right, for once.'

because whoever came up with "i love you" never really meant it like i do
rhys watched odette's face light up as soon as she had seen him. it was truly hard not to do the same. but, his face was already lighter in emotion. just catching a glimpse of her did that to him. there wasn't anyone else that could lighten his emotions any more than odette, from thinking about her and then seeing her.
once he got to the table, odette had stood up, and wrapped her arms around him, squeezing tightly. he wrapped his around her smaller frame, and then rocked them from side to side for a moment or two. he never really cared how long they remained in their hugs, he couldn't, to be honest. he loved the way he could just hold her, as if nothing could and would go wrong. as if it was just them. nothing else mattered to him in these moments. he let her go then, and allowed her the step back. it wasn't a very large step back, but he could definitely feel that small distance.
once she responded to him, he took the seat opposite the table from her. he smiled, and waited for her to say something next, as she often did. she asked how he was, mentioned that she hadn't seen him yesterday, and then said that she didn't trust him when he said fine over the phone. he nodded. yeah, he wasn't at school yesterday, and then was a little more reserved over the phone with odette about what was going on. it wasn't really like him, and she was right. however, he just shrugged. it wasn't really much. but to not really say what it was to her, that was another thing.
first, he hadn't gone off to school because he wasn't feeling well. he had actually ended up sleeping half the day away, and hadn't realized he had called or texted odette to let her know. for some reason or another, that had slipped his mind. then, when she had called later, he was feeling better, but was still extrememly tired. he had been half-way to being asleep or so when she had. he hadn't meant to cut anything short, but had just done it. yeah, i'm alright. i got some twenty-four hour flu yesterday or something. and when you had called, i was just about to doze off. i'm fine now, rhys said, explaining it to her.
he then watched her remove her scarf, running her fingers on the necklace he had gotten her. it made him smile just that much more. he loved to see her wearing it. even if he knew she never took it off. it was a gift from him, and he hadn't thought much of it, until she had opened it, and never took it off since. sure, he had thought about what exactly to get her, though.
she had then asked him about the weather. yeah, the people of the city seemed to be loving it, as well as he did. yes, it definitely shocked me quite a bit, when they were right, rhys said, talking about the weathermen. it shocked everyone, though. he chuckled a bit when she said it was strange and she had to go searching for a pair of shorts for her to wear. well, i keep all my clothes together, so i don't have to actually go searching. just open a drawer, and there they are. he said, chuckling light-heartedly a little again.
