the grand duke cosimo i of the medici family wanted the construction of uffizi to host offices and statal archives and commissioned his architect of trust, the vasari, the planning of an important building. works started in 1560 and were completed by architect buontalenti. the gallery features artworks by michelangelo, leonardo di vinci and botticelli. botticelli's famous work, the birth of venus, can be found here.
